Sustainability of Australian Rural Communities

Summary
This project is part of a national study funded by the Australian Research Council and organised by the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. Seven case studies investigated the dimensions of sustainability in Australian rural communities. South Australia’s case study focuses on the Gilbert Valley. This study investigates the development of economic, social, human, institutional and environmental capital in the region. It shows the tenacity of social attachments to small rural communities. However, the area over which residents carry out economic activity has greatly expanded. There has also been a diversification of economic activity. Among the key changes in the area is the withdrawl of government services, resulting in substantial multiplier effects. The population of the area has substantially changed, hampering the development of social activity. The study shows the potential for the region to be sustainable but this needs appropriate policy and infrastructure support being provided. .
