Heartlands Project Map

Summary
GISCA conducted a spatial analysis of potential demand for telecommunications products in rural Australia using Eyre Peninsula as a pilot area. The project incorporated different databases into a spatial environment. Synthetic Estimates of personal computer/internet usage by location were developed by combining information sourced from ABS surveys with data taken from the ABS census of Housing and Population. Information on agricultural businesses and their IT usage was also incorporated, as was a database detailing registered businesses by town location. GISCA’s Accessibility / Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA) was used to indicate the relative isolation of each town. A digital elevation model (DEM) was used to facilitate viewshed and line of sight analysis, for communication tower placement. By combining diverse datasets GISCA developed a broad analysis of potential telecommunications demand in rural Australia. .
