Rethinking the ASGC: Some Conceptual and Practical Issues

Summary
In 1996 GISCA acted as a consultant to the Australia Bureau of Statistic’s review of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC). The focus of GISCA’ s consultancy was: Criteria to be used in relation to urban areas and their delineation; Criteria to be used in the description of remoteness; and advice on a range of other clasificatory descriptions to be adopted in the ASGC and on their conceptual basis. The re-engineering of the ASGC will be done by the ABS. GISCA provided the conceptual underpinnings and advice on the operationalisation of suggested changes in the ASGC. The bulk of GISCA’s recommendations have subsequently been adopted by the ABS. .
