Mapping Aboriginal Archaeological Sites

Summary
This project mapped aboriginal archaeological sites situated around the Menindee Lakes Region of Western NSW. More than 3000 sites were marked with a global positioning system. The characteristics of existing archaeological sites were compared to vegetation data sets, lands-system data sets and distance to water data sets of the region. A predictive model was developed to find other areas of archaeological significance. Potential sites that shared similar characteristics of existing sites were highlighted. The results were displayed as a predictive raster of 50m grid cells in 3D and overlaid on a SPOT satellite image of the area. Potential archeological sites were colored red and have highest relief. .
